Phoenicia University (PU) is committed to fostering strategic partnerships that advance sustainable development and strengthen its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals. Through collaboration with government institutions, NGOs, international organizations, academic networks, and professional bodies, PU promotes knowledge exchange, collaborative research, capacity building, and community engagement.

Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG
PU Staff Member Participates in the Arab Youth Parliament Model Simulation — August 10, 2024
On August 10, 2024, PU staff member Faten Mhanna participated in a model simulation of the Arab Youth Parliament in Cairo, organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Egypt. The conference served as a youth dialogue platform aimed at promoting community participation, strengthening sustainability, and empowering young people to contribute to addressing challenges facing the Arab world.
The conference brought together young participants from across the Arab region to exchange ideas, discuss shared challenges, and develop perspectives on strengthening Arab youth cooperation and diplomacy. Discussions also emphasized the values of loyalty, belonging, and Arab identity, while encouraging greater communication and understanding among Arab youth.
As part of the social dimension of the discussions, Mhanna contributed to a proposal for establishing a Youth Arab Bridge Program, designed to connect ideas and youth-led initiatives across Arab countries. Participants also highlighted the importance of dialogue and communication in overcoming perceived barriers created by political and media narratives and in fostering stronger connections among Arab youth.
Cross sectoral dialogue about SDGs
PU promotes cross-sectoral dialogue by engaging with government institutions, international organizations, and academic partners on issues related to sustainable development. In 2024, these efforts included engagement with Lebanon’s legislative institutions on governance and decision-making, as well as participation in an international academic dialogue on sustainable agrifood systems.
Cross-Sectoral Dialogue on Human Rights Challenges — April 26, 2024
In April 2024, PU's Faculty of Law participated in the Oxford moot court competition, where students competed alongside an open-table discussion on contemporary human rights challenges. The discussion convened judges, practicing human rights lawyers, NGO staff, government representatives, and academics from multiple international institutions, providing PU students with direct exposure to cross-sectoral dialogue on human rights issues connected to SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions). This engagement reflects PU's broader commitment to fostering dialogue between academia, the legal profession, and government and civil-society actors on matters of governance and human rights.
PU's Faculty of Law has also engaged in international legal dialogue through participation in the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition, in which students argue before panels of judges, practicing international lawyers, and legal scholars.

Government Dialogue on Consumer Protection — May 3, 2023
In 2023, PU hosted the Director General of Lebanon's Ministry of Economy (Mohamad Abou Haidar) and Trade as a guest speaker on consumer protection, followed by an open discussion and Q&A session with the participants. The exchange addressed regulatory and policy dimensions of consumer protection relevant to SDG12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), reflecting PU's engagement in dialogue between academia and government on matters of economic governance and consumer welfare.

Interview with Aref Yassine on the Lebanese Order of Engineers and Architects — December 12, 2023
On December 12, 2023, Phoenicia University (PU) hosted an interview with Aref Yassine, President of the Lebanese Order of Engineers and Architects and Secretary General of the Civil Engineers Section.
The interview addressed key topics related to the engineering profession and the role of the Order. Discussions covered the application and registration process, the benefits and services provided by the Order, and the role and responsibilities of engineers toward the professional body. Yassine also shared valuable advice with students on building a successful professional career and maintaining a strong sense of responsibility toward the engineering profession.
The session concluded with a Q&A session, during which students had the opportunity to ask questions, seek clarification on professional matters, and engage directly with Yassine on topics related to their future careers.
By connecting students with a professional leader and providing practical guidance on career development and professional responsibilities, the session contributed to SDG 4 – Quality Education and SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, supporting students’ professional knowledge, employability, and preparation for the engineering workforce.

International Academic Dialogue on Sustainable Agrifood Systems — March 26, 2024
In 2024, PU participated, through its membership in the Mediterranean Universities Union (UNIMED), in the international webinar “Empowering Academia with FAO eLearning Academy Courses and Resources for Transforming Agrifood Systems,” held on 26 March 2024. Organized by the FAO eLearning Academy in partnership with UNIMED, the engaging webinar brought together FAO representatives and universities, including PU, to exchange perspectives on sustainable agrifood systems and the role of higher education in supporting SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).

International collaboration data gathering for SDG
International Research Collaboration on Sustainable Materials — 2024
In 2024, Dr. Kamel Bou Hamdan, then a faculty member in PU's College of Engineering, contributed to an international research collaboration examining green, environmentally sustainable alternatives to synthetic chemicals used in oil recovery — work submitted for peer review in April 2024 alongside co-authors from Beirut Arab University and Heriot-Watt University (UK). The resulting study, "Advancements in Green Materials for Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery: A Review," was independently classified by Heriot-Watt's research repository as contributing to SDG9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), reflecting PU's engagement in international academic collaboration on sustainability-relevant research.

In 2024, Dr. Zahi Abdul Sater, Interim Dean of PU's College of Public Health, contributed to an international research collaboration examining the non-publication of completed clinical trials in urological cancer. The study — involving co-authors from institutions in Jordan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates — analyzed 767 urological cancer clinical trials conducted globally between 2000 and 2020, finding that 47.2% remained unpublished, and identified the factors most strongly associated with non-publication. The paper, "Factors Affecting the Non-Publication of Clinical Trials of Prevalent Urological Cancer" (World Journal of Urology, 2024), lists Dr. Abdul Sater's affiliation as PU's College of Public Health, reflecting PU's engagement in international collaborative research on data transparency in global health.

On June 4, 2024, PU participated in the 8th UI GreenMetric World University Rankings Network Meeting, bringing together the UI GreenMetric Secretariat and national coordinators from countries around the world. The meeting focused on sharing national sustainability initiatives, discussing strategic frameworks, and strengthening collaboration among universities to address global sustainability challenges. Discussions also explored how universities can work collectively through the UI GreenMetric network to advance sustainability practices and exchange knowledge and experiences.

Collaboration with NGOs for SDGs
PU collaborates with international and local NGOs to advance the SDGs through student training, educational resource development, and volunteer programming.
ICRC Training and International Humanitarian Law Moot Court
PU Faculty of Law students received direct training from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in preparation for participation in an International Humanitarian Law moot court competition. This collaboration reflects the development of educational resources delivered in partnership with a recognized international humanitarian organization, equipping students with specialized knowledge of humanitarian law relevant to SDG16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions).
Partnership with the Lebanese Welfare Association for the Handicapped (LWAH)
PU maintains an ongoing partnership with LWAH, a Lebanese NGO, through which students participate in volunteer initiatives, and through which educational materials, such as Diabetes Awareness campaign resources and mobile clinics, have been jointly developed.

Research Partnership: Public Health Needs Assessments for LWAH
Through PBHL 203 (Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation) and PBHL 212 (Food Security and Safety), Public Health students conduct structured needs assessments of the population served by the Lebanese Welfare Association for the Handicapped (LWAH), evaluating nutritional needs, food security, and broader community health needs. Students then develop and deliver formal recommendations to LWAH based on their findings, giving the organization applied, evidence-based input to inform its programming.

Diabetes Awareness and Free Diagnostic Campaign
Since 2023, PU, in partnership with LWAH, has contributed to national health data collection through its diabetes awareness and diagnostic campaign. Diagnostic data gathered through the initiative — covering both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes cases — is reported to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health (MoPh) as part of national health surveillance requirements, supporting broader efforts to monitor and measure progress on SDG-related health indicators.

Institutional Commitment
PU demonstrates a clear institutional commitment to advancing education on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This commitment is embedded across the University's teaching, research, community engagement, and institutional planning, reflecting its mission to prepare graduates who understand global challenges, demonstrate ethical responsibility, and contribute to sustainable development.
The University's Strategic Plan 2024–2029 includes a dedicated section, Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, which adopts the 17 SDGs as a guiding framework for institutional development. The Strategic Plan commits PU to integrating the SDGs across its academic programs, research activities, community engagement initiatives, and institutional operations. Mandatory SDG Education for All Students
All PU undergraduate students (except students enrolled in the College of Law and Political Science, which follows a separate curriculum structure) are required to complete 30 credits of General Education courses. This university-wide curriculum provides all students with foundational knowledge and competencies related to SDG principles, including ethical responsibility, global citizenship, scientific literacy, communication skills, cultural awareness, and social responsibility.
The General Education curriculum supports SDG integration by ensuring that students from different academic disciplines are exposed to key concepts related to sustainable development and global challenges.

Technology and Science Fair — April 30, 2024
The 2024 Technology and Science Fair, supported education for sustainable development by encouraging students to apply scientific and technological knowledge to address real-world challenges aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. The winning project, “City 2.0: Unveiling the Future of Smart and Sustainable Urban Living,” explored technology-driven solutions for enhancing urban safety, improving resource efficiency, and strengthening citizen participation, reflecting themes related to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities).
Through this experiential learning activity, students engage with sustainability concepts by developing innovative solutions to societal challenges. PU faculty members evaluated the projects, reinforcing the University's commitment to interdisciplinary learning, innovation, and the development of future professionals capable of contributing to sustainable development.

PU Research Center Hosts Workshop on Research Vision and Sustainable Development — December 19, 2024

Education for SDGs: specific courses on sustainability
PU offers dedicated sustainability courses across its academic programs by embedding sustainability principles and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into discipline-specific, credit-based courses. Students across all six colleges engage with sustainability-related topics that connect theoretical knowledge with practical solutions to contemporary environmental, social, legal, economic, and public health challenges.

PU runs a range of dedicated outreach activities that extend the University's educational mission to alumni, local community, and displaced populations. Alumni Contributions to Knowledge Sharing and Community Engagement
PU alumni actively contribute to the University’s educational and public engagement mission by sharing their professional expertise and experiences with students and the wider community. For example, on October 10, 2023, PU alumnus Mahmoud Hashoush delivered a seminar on Climate Change Epidemiology, providing participants with insights from his post-graduation expertise and professional experience.

Displaced People and Refugees
Since 2023, PU has partnered with LWAH to implement a series of mobile medical clinics in Lebanon. The ongoing initiative is carried out in collaboration with 15 municipalities, expanding access to essential healthcare services for local communities. Between 2023 and 2024, the program reached approximately 1,500–2,000 beneficiaries through these municipal partnerships. In parallel, the mobile clinics provided healthcare services to more than eight centers serving displaced communities in Beirut, benefiting approximately 4,200 individuals across an estimated 450–600 households per center.
Faculty members from the College of Public Health have been directly involved in the initiative, supervising and participating in the clinics alongside LWAH's medical teams. Their involvement ensures the outreach is supported by academic expertise and reflects the university's broader commitment to community engagement.
The clinics focus on three main components:
- Community health education: Faculty and medical teams inform and educate residents on health conditions, prevention, and available care.
- On-site diagnosis and screening: Enables early identification of health issues and referral for further treatment where needed.
- Free access to medication: Removes cost as a barrier for residents in need of treatment.

School and Youth Outreach in the Region
PU’s outreach team engages approximately 175 schools and 8,750–10,500 students annually across South Lebanon. These activities focus on providing guidance on higher education pathways and emerging career fields. Targeted initiatives also support increased participation of female students in underrepresented fields, including Engineering and Computer Science, reaching more than 900 female students in 2024.

Vocational Training for the Wider Community
Through its partnership with the Lebanese Welfare Association for the Handicapped (LWAH), PU supports free certified vocational workshops delivered through the PU Incubator. These workshops are open to community members regardless of academic background or disability status and include training in sewing, orthotics and medical appliances, mobility-aids repair, jewelry making, carpentry, and carpet weaving. Several workshops operate year-round to provide continuous skills development and employment opportunities.
