Diabetes Awareness and Free Diagnostic Campaign

As part of its commitment to improving community health and wellbeing, Phoenicia University (PU), in partnership with the Lebanese Welfare Association for the Handicapped (LWAH), has implemented an ongoing Diabetes Awareness and Free Diagnostic Campaign since 2023. The initiative addresses both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes by combining public education, free diagnostic services, and continuous follow-up support. As part of the project's national health surveillance requirements, aggregated diagnostic data are reported to the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health.

Through the PU–LWAH partnership, a series of free educational sessions are delivered throughout the year and are open to both students and members of the wider community. Led by qualified physicians and nutritionists, the sessions provide evidence-based information on Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, including risk factors, early warning signs, prevention strategies, disease management, and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices. The programme aims to improve health literacy and encourage the early detection and effective management of diabetes.

In addition to awareness activities, participants receive free consultations with diabetes specialists and nutritionists, comprehensive diabetes screening, and home blood glucose monitoring devices (glucometers) to support ongoing self-management. Screening results are used to determine the appropriate follow-up care and referrals for each participant, ensuring that support is tailored to individual clinical needs. Individuals diagnosed through the campaign receive continuous monitoring and follow-up to promote effective disease management and long-term health outcomes.

During 2024, the campaign supported 49 individuals living with Type 1 diabetes and 35 individuals living with Type 2 diabetes, with additional cases continuing to be identified and supported as the initiative remains active. Through sustained collaboration with LWAH, the campaign expands access to essential diabetes education, screening, and follow-up services, contributing to improved community health and reinforcing Phoenicia University's commitment to preventive healthcare and public service.
