Soil Mechanics and Plain Concrete Laboratory

The Soil Mechanics and Plain Concrete Laboratory is located in Block D in the underground area. The lab is designed to accommodate a total of 24 students.

The Soil Mechanics Facility offers students the experience to understand the complexity of soil as a material.  In this facility, students also learn about the precautions required and the restrictions associated with using various types of soils and their respective tests. All the testing procedures applied in this facility are in line with ASTM standards.

This facility is equipped with many advanced and high-tech equipment such as:

  • Fully Automated Triaxial Machine:
    • Offers UU, CU, CD triaxial and unconfined compression tests (ASTM D2850, D4767, D7181, and D2166)
  • Direct Shear Apparatus:
    • Tests the shear strength properties of the soil (ASTM D3080)
  •  Permeability Apparatus:
    • Determines the coefficient of permeability by a constant-head method for laminar flow of water through granular soils (ASTM D2434-68)
  • Liquid Limit Device:
    • Determines the moisture content at which clay soil passes from a plastic to a liquid state (ASTM D4318)

The Plain Concrete Facility introduces civil and environmental engineering students to engineering properties and applications of commonly used construction materials in the built environment. All the testing procedures carried out in this facility follow the ASTM standards.

This facility is equipped with many advanced and high-tech equipment such as:

  • Concrete Compression Machine:
    • Tests compressive strength of concrete specimens (ASTM C39)
  •  Unitronic Tensile Machine:
    • Tests for flexural strength of concrete (ASTM C293)
  •  Los Angles Abrasion:
    • Measures aggregates’ toughness and abrasion characteristics (ASTM C131)
  •  Mechanical Sieve Shaker:
    • Tests sieve analysis of fine and course aggregates (ASTM C136)
