SDGs Training Workshop for Staff: Integrating Sustainability into Everyday Practice

Phoenicia University (PU) organized a training workshop for staff members representing offices and departments across the University to strengthen their understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their relevance to the University's operations. The workshop aimed to equip staff with the knowledge and practical guidance needed to integrate sustainability into their daily responsibilities and departmental activities.

The session introduced the 17 SDGs, highlighting their relevance to higher education institutions and the role of administrative and operational offices in advancing sustainable development. Particular attention was given to how staff members can translate the Goals into practical actions within their respective areas of work, including:

  • Responsible Resource Use (SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production; SDG 13 – Climate Action): Reducing energy, water and paper consumption and adopting environmentally responsible workplace practices.
  • Environmental Responsibility (SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation; SDG 12): Encouraging water conservation, responsible waste management and the efficient use of university resources.
  • Health and Well-being (SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being): Supporting a healthy, safe and supportive working and learning environment.
  • Gender Equality and Equal Opportunities (SDG 5 – Gender Equality; SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities): Promoting equal treatment, inclusive workplace practices and equitable opportunities for all employees, regardless of gender or background.
  • Decent Work and Fair Employment (SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth): Applying fair recruitment and employment practices, supporting professional development, promoting safe working conditions and ensuring equitable treatment of faculty and staff.
  • Quality Education and Lifelong Learning (SDG 4 – Quality Education): Encouraging continuous learning, professional development and capacity-building opportunities for employees.
  • Responsible Decision-Making (SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions): Promoting transparency, accountability, ethical conduct and responsible administrative practices across university offices.

Through interactive discussions and practical examples, participants explored how the SDGs relate to their offices' functions and how their existing responsibilities can contribute to specific Goals. Staff members were encouraged to identify opportunities to incorporate sustainability considerations into departmental procedures, services and everyday decisions. Particular emphasis was placed on the role of Human Resources in advancing decent work, equal opportunities, non-discrimination, employee well-being and continuous professional development.

The initiative forms part of PU's ongoing efforts to integrate the SDGs across its institutional operations and organizational culture, recognizing staff education and engagement as essential to advancing its sustainability commitments.
