Dr. Zahi Abdul Sater Publishes New Study on Colorectal Cancer Research Trends in the Arab World
Dr. Zahi Abdul Sater, Interim-Dean of the College of Public Health at Phoenicia University, has published a new study titled: “Trends and Gaps in Colorectal Cancer Screening Research in the Arab World: A 16-Year Bibliometric Analysis (2007–2023)”.
The study examines trends in colorectal cancer research across Arab countries between 2007 and 2023. The analysis reviewed 124 scientific publications, revealing that while research output has increased by 16.5% annually, its translation into national screening programs and policy action remains modest.
The paper highlights both notable progress and critical gaps — with Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, and Qatar emerging as leading contributors, while other countries with a high disease burden show minimal research activity. It also identifies an imbalance in focus: most studies explore awareness and attitudes, whereas fewer address implementation, cost-effectiveness, or program evaluation — areas essential for improving early detection and prevention.
Dr. Abdul Sater, noted that “These gaps underscore why colorectal cancer screening remains underdeveloped in many parts of the region, despite growing evidence of its life-saving potential.”
The findings provide a strategic roadmap for policymakers, researchers, and health professionals to bridge these gaps through regional collaboration and evidence-based public health initiatives.
