Phoenicia University - Lebanese Welfare Association for the Handicapped: Diabetes Awareness and Free Diagnostic Campaign
As part of its continuous community support programme, Phoenicia University adopted this diabetes awareness and free diagnostic initiative through its ongoing community services agreement with LWAH. Launched in 2023 and still active today, the project addresses both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, with final diagnostic data reported to the Ministry of Health a as part of the project's national health surveillance requirements.
PU, in collaboration with LWAH, organized a series of free educational events on diabetes awareness, open to the public. The sessions were delivered by a nutritionist and a doctor and covered both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes — their causes, warning signs, and day-to-day management — giving attendees a clear, medically grounded understanding of the condition rather than general health advice.
Open to both students and the wider community, the campaign goes beyond awareness-raising alone: participants receive free consultations with diabetes specialists and nutritionists, along with free diabetes testing machines to support at-home monitoring. Diagnostic testing determines the specific care and follow-up each participant receives, ensuring that support is matched to individual health needs rather than delivered as generic outreach. Cases identified through testing receive continuous follow-up and monitoring to support improved health outcomes over time.
As an ongoing initiative delivered through the PU–LWAH partnership, in 2024, the campaign has supported 49 individuals with Type 1 diabetes and 35 individuals with Type 2 diabetes, with additional cases continuing to be identified and supported as the project remains active.
This directly supplied initiative reflects Phoenicia University's ongoing commitment to improving community access to essential health services.
