Starting from the 4th of April and up until the 9th of May, students gathered in the auditorium each Tuesday at the lunch break to watch the screening of Planet Earth II. The screening was conducted by Phoenicia University Science Club. The documentary Planet Earth II is a 2016 multinational nature documentary series produced by the BBC as a sequel to Planet Earth, which was broadcast in 2006.
Phoenicia University Science Club made it possible to all students to experience the world from the viewpoint of animals themselves. From spellbinding wildlife spectacle to intimate encounters, Planet Earth II took these students closer than ever before.
Another thing we took into consideration when we had the idea to screen such an event was that the episodes were in English and no subtitles were shown. Thus, students employed their listening skills, ones that are essential to grasping meaning and to becoming more familiar with scientific terms in English.
The documentary covered 6 topics, islands, mountains, jungles, deserts, grasslands and cities. Each episode presented a topic of the above. Students were told a week beforehand about the topic they will watch and a short summary was attached to the poster announcing the screening.
As the president of the Science Club, I tried my best to spread awareness of how much this documentary will be of important benefits to all parties, from students to staff...
Moreover I personally believe that students who had the chance to attend the screenings have gained many skills, e.g critical thinking, listening, writing and even communication ones.
It was an aesthetic event, and we hope we were of much help in spreading such fascinating knowledge among students.
